UV-C is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that ranges from 100-400nm. Within the range of the ultraviolet radiation (100-400nm) a subdivision has been made due to the different characteristics of the wavelength regions. The Ultraviolet region has been divided a in 4 separate regions: Vacuum UV (100-200nm), UV-C “short wavelength” (200-280nm), UV-B “medium wavelength” (280-315nm) and UV-A “blacklight” (315-400nm). From which UV-C (254nm) is mainly used for disinfection purposes. When used safely, UV-C light is a very fast and efficient method of eliminating micro-organisms, such as fighting bacteria, germs and viruses (ALSO COVID-19). In addition, UV-C light is a particularly clean one technology. The disinfecting effect of UV-C radiation has been known for more than 100 years and is yet used worldwide in a wide variety of applications.

UV-C is the key to disinfection!

UV-C light destroys the DNA structure of microorganisms and prevents them from reproducing. As the DNA is used by the cell for protein production or duplicated for cell division, the reading enzymes stop working once UV-C radiation destroys the connection between primordial DNA components. The more defective spots that exist in the DNA strand, the greater the damage to the life of the cell, including for micro-organisms. This principle explains the dose-response principle: the stronger the UV-C dose, the more frequent will be the damage and the higher the mortality rate, because the readout process of the enzymes is interrupted. This molecular change makes the DNA unusable for the essential process of transcription (metabolism) and replication (cell division). Therefore, the lack of enzymes and the blocking of cell division results in cell death. As a result, the micro-organism is made harmless and dies.
